This complex redesign project involved the demolition of the old baths, and the construction of a new 8 lane 25m pool and 10m x 20m teaching pool with a full mobile floor. The dry sports facilities were enhanced with a new fitness suite and health spa, and recreational facilities enhanced with a children’s adventure play area and the dynamic public realm with a restaurant/bar.
The building was completed in 1999, and was voted the best public building in Bromley in 2000. It also topped the Observer poll of public sports facilities. Since its completion it has maintained its position as one of London’s most popular sports facilities. It’s elegant and sophisticated design solution responds to the way in which people use sport and leisure facilities and is an example of high quality that we continue to strive for.
“At the Beckenham Spa swimming complex LA Architects has given Bromley Council an exemplary building of chic modernism. This should be an inspiration to other local authorities.”Isabel Allen – Architects Journal
