A Happy New Year to everyone, and a warm welcome to the newest member of LA architects; Davide Perottoni.
Davide studied architecture in Venice and at TU Delft where he graduated cum laude in 2017 with work on the uses of literature as a tool for design. He has worked on numerous public buildings in Italy following both his Bachelor and Master degree.
Davide has joined the team now developing the major civic and cultural building in Wandsworth that contains a library, sports complex, children's centre and community centre. His skills and experience are ideally suited and LA are fortunate to have secured his skills. Davide is also excited about developing his skills and learning from the team at LA.
LA is pleased to welcome two new members to our team; Rie Ishimoto and Kevin Agon.
Rie finished her Masters in Architecture at Oxford Brookes University in September. She has worked on numerous residential projects after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in Japan.
Rie is a keen traveller, who is interested in historical buildings and landscapes and she adds to our strong technical capability.
Kevin has joined LA for a year as part of his ‘Year in Practice’ after completing his Architecture Part 2 course at Cardiff University. Along with an Architecture degree, he also studied Interior Architecture & Design and has previously worked as an Architectural Technician in London. As an aspiring architect, he puts great value in continuous learning and understanding how to design and build great building.
LA continues to build a team with a strong emphasis on education and the future development of our practice.
Planning permission has been granted for the RAC Family Facility in Epsom. Due to being located in a Grade II listed Victorian Walled Garden, and also within the green belt, this is an outstanding result.
In September 2016, The London Borough of Hackney commissioned LA to refurbish and redesign the popular London Fields Lido. The scheme consisted of a heated outdoor 50m pool with indoor and outdoor changing. Work commenced on site in April and is shortly due for completion.
Mike Lawless: 'While I was on site, I shared my small office with the carved but battered image of James. He came from the Townhouse and has been returned to the Townhouse.
While we shared a room we became good friends and I am delighted that he can see the beautiful and restored building that he helped to build 150 years ago.'

LA are celebrating our 25th year of designing and delivering successful, popular and we believe beautiful buildings.
We believe that successful buildings only come from a team that is happy, resolved and supported. So here in our base in the beautiful South Downs, we have created a family environment but one that is highly professional.
We have enjoyed our first 25 years and all of us are looking forward to the future.
In April LA were invited to send two members of their team to join a UK delegation of architects and lighting designers for a tour of the iGuzzini factory in Recanti, Italy.
During the two-day trip, they were treated to a host of local sights, including the Frassassi Caves and the Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto. This was in addition to a tour of their factory and an exceptional showcase of iGuzzini’s latest wares at their impeccably detailed offices.
All combined with unparalleled Italian hospitality, it was truly a trip to remember.
The passion and knowledge shown by iGuzzini’s team is inspiring, and they truly are leading the way with innovative design for LED lighting.

Ryan came to us; found us and persuaded us that we really needed him.
We did not know it but we did. He also needed us.
He became one of our family; not as an architect but as one who was committed to what we did.
He believed in us and in the work that we did. He saw us work hard for the projects and people who used them and he gave himself to promoting that. He got us noticed; got us awards; and gave us self-belief that we should be proud of our work. In short he gave more to us than we perhaps gave to him.
Ryan left us all suddenly; too young and too suddenly.
We spent some time understanding that he would not come back; that he had gone to help the angels with their PR and management.
Their gain is our loss.
Now we will move on and have to remove Ryan from our website. We have not removed him from our Studio or our work though.
We remember him and here you may see that we asked his Parents to plant a tree for us outside our Studio in the Sussex Downs so that we would always know that he was here.
‘Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night’

In the heart of London, a stone’s throw from King Cross Station, a new development seeks to reinvigorate not just this area of the capital, but the way we design public leisure services and related community facilities.
5 Pancras Square houses the new offices for Camden Council, the new public library and Pancras Square Leisure with two pools, a spa and a fully equipped fitness suite.
Pool & Spa Scene magazine came to visit the Centre and talk about how the brief was designed to meet the needs of this area, how the facilities were chosen, and how they have been developed. For the full article please click here.
The new BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ headquarters for the London Borough of Camden brings together council offices, customer-facing council services, a library and leisure facilities in a landmark location on the King’s Cross Central masterplan. Bristol's Hengrove Leisure Centre featuring extensive use of Technal’s aluminium curtain walling, has received a National Award in recognition of its outstanding design and contribution to the local community.
Parkwood Consultancy Services led and project managed the build for the state of the art leisure centre and it is operated by Parkwood Leisure on behalf of Bristol City Council.
Designed by LA architects, the £35m Hengrove Park Leisure Centre was built by Kier Construction on the site of a former airport. The privately financed project is also one of the first centres in the UK with a 50m swimming pool to achieve a BREEAM 'excellent rating. It opened in 2013 and has surpassed all expectations for it's use and membership quotas.
At the London Planning Awards 2013-14 ceremony on 4th Feb. 2014, LA architects, Barratt London, the London Borough of Lewisham and Pellikaan Construction received the ‘Best Built Project – Community Scale Scheme’ award for the newly completed Glass Mill Leisure Centre.
The project demonstrates how, through partnership, good & exciting architecture can be delivered. “This kind of project, which draws in both residents and the larger community, is demonstrative of the beneficial and productive effects that planning can have.”
Judges commended The Glass Mill, which opened in summer 2013, for its “transformational impact on the wider area, benefits to the local community, design and ingenuity."
We are delighted and congratulate the whole team who worked hard to deliver this exceptional project for the Community of Lewisham.
Cllr Alan Smith, Lewisham’s Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said:
“We’re delighted that The Glass Mill has triumphed at this year's London Planning Awards. This is actually the fifth Lewisham Council project that has received a Planning Award in recent years, and just goes to demonstrate how much innovative, high-quality development is taking place across the borough.”
